How much protein do you actually need on a GLP-1?

Rapid weight loss costs muscle unless protein goes up. This works out your daily target, splits it across meals, and shows what that looks like in real food.

Where these numbers come from

The usual clinical target during active GLP-1 weight loss is 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — higher than the general population guideline, because the goal is not just to lose weight but to lose the right kind. Trials of rapid weight loss consistently show that a meaningful share of what comes off is lean mass unless protein intake and resistance training hold it in place.

Two adjustments matter. If you are over 65, the evidence supports the upper end — older muscle responds less efficiently to the same amount of protein. If you are lifting, the upper end too. If you are doing neither, protein alone slows muscle loss but does not stop it.

If your starting weight is well above your goal, calculating against current weight can produce a number that is hard to actually eat, particularly when appetite is suppressed. That is why the calculator shows a goal-weight figure as well. Most prescribers work somewhere between the two.

The per-meal number is the one people miss

Total daily protein is not the whole story. Muscle protein synthesis responds to a threshold of roughly 25 to 30 grams in a sitting, so four meals of 30 grams does more for lean mass than one meal of 120. On a GLP-1 this is the hard part, not the easy part — appetite suppression makes large meals genuinely unpleasant, which is why most people end up front-loading protein earlier in the day when tolerance is better.

If you cannot hit it

Very common in the first few months, and not a failure. The usual order of operations is: protein first in every meal before anything else on the plate, then liquid protein where solid food is not going down, then smaller and more frequent rather than fewer and larger. Managing nausea helps more than willpower does.

What people use to actually hit the number — a scale, and something drinkable for the days food is not happening.

If you have kidney disease, liver disease, or any condition affecting how you process protein, these targets may not apply to you — ask the clinician managing your treatment.
